Ever since we started the Écoutez column on Beauty Flash Blog, we've been flooded via Twitter and email (and sometimes in person) with the same question:
What's the French rap song in Sex and the City, and who sings it?
How nice of you to ask! It's called "La Belle et le Bad Boy" - a play on the French fairytale La Belle et Le Bête or Beauty and the Beast - and it was written and performed by the hip-hop star MC Solaar.
Born in Senegal and raised in the suburbs of Paris, MC Solaar (née Claude M'Barali) is one of France's most famous and influential rappers, boasting nine solo albums, plus collaborations with Missy Elliott and Guru. He lives in Paris with his wife, the French film star Chloé Bensemoun, and their two children.
"La Belle et le Bad Boy" is one of the songs on MC Solaar's 2001 album, Cinqième As. It tells the story of a high school girl who falls in love with a dangerous guy, and (spoiler alert) dies at the end in a shootout. Carrie Bradshaw manages to avoid this dire fate, although she does have to wear a bird on her head during a botched wedding...
